Neely Spence, an eight-time NCAA Division II cross country and track champion who is now part of the Michigan-based Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, will compete in the USA 5K Championships in Providence, Rhode Island, on September 16. Her best 5000 on the track is 15:27.72.

Spence, 22, was coached as a home-schooled teenager and at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania by her father, the 1991 IAAF World Championships marathon bronze medalist Steve Spence.  She missed this year's U.S. Olympic Trials due to a foot injury. In her first race back from injury, she was the 11th woman, and third American, at the 7-mile Falmouth Road Race on August 12.
