Robby Andrews and Alan Webb ran in the their first 1500m race together this past weekend at the 2012 USATF Oxy High Performance Meet. For both athletes things are going in the right direction as the spring progresses. Andrews had a huge breakthrough with a near seven second PR running 3:34 and almost outkicking World 5k Champ Mo Farah. Webb continued to show improvement as he ran a season's best 3:37. Flotrack was able to chat with the duo to talk about training together, Webb's confidence and Robby being back to his old self. Oh yeah, don't forget about Robby's Italian Stalian sponsorship and Webb's imitation of Gags, all good things.
Succesful as an underclassmen in High School with highlights that include an 800m indoor state championship and Millrose Mile runner-up as a junior, Robby exploded in his senior year. He won the prestigious Millrose Mile, then a week later broke Alan Webb's 1,000m High School National Record by over a second. His 2:22.28 was run off a slow opening quater, as he closed in 1:22 for the last 600m. At the National Scholastic Indoor Championships, Robby won his first national title and broke his second High School National Record of the season. His win in the 800m made him the first Amercian prep to run under 1:50 indoors with his 1:49.21. Outdoors the success continued as he ran a mile PR of 4:03.49, set a NJ Meet of Champs record and nation leading 800m time of 1:48.66, and he won an outdoor national 800m title to go along with his indoor title. At the end of 2009, Robby was named to the ESPN Rise All-Decade Track and Field Team.
In his freshman year at Virginia, the success continued for Robby and he won almost every race her ran. His win in at the indoor NCAA Championships, out-leaning Oregon senior and Olympian Andrew Wheating was one of the most talked about races of the year. In his first collegiate spring season, Robby outlasted Wheating again on the anchor of the Penn Relays C.O.A. 4x800 to lead his team to the victory, but Wheating came out on top at home at the Outdoor NCAA meet, where Robby finished a strong 2nd in a strong 800 final that saw 1:46.17 not make it out of the semi-final. He also ran a PR of 1:45.5 in the prelims.
As a sophomore Andrews redshirted the indoor season with some injury but came back outdoor stronger than ever. He went on the win his second NCAA title overall and first outdoors as he came from way back with a monster kick in the final 150 meters. Andrews ran a massive PR of 1:44.71 to beat out Charles Jock, Elijah Greer and Cas Loxsom. At the US Championships later that month Andrews made the final but finish last running only 1:51 and missing the opportunity to run at the World Championships.
On March 13, 2012 Robby Andrews, only a junior at UVA, annouced that he would forgo his collegiate eligibility and purse a professional track and field career. His agent is Ray Flynn of Flynn Sports Management and his coach remained Jason Vigilante. In staying with "Vig" his new training partner became Alan Webb, the American Record Holder for the mile.
